The Sacking Continues …..

Departure of Jose Mourinho on 20th Sept 2007 from Chelsea FC was the biggest setback in the history of club. Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire and owner of Chelsea FC is still unable to understand the ‘change is bad’ culture of English football.

The sacking of Luiz Scolari as Chelsea's Manager on 09Feb2009 is not just a great shock to Chelsea's fans but also to the football followers worldwide. There is no doubt in the management abilities of 62 years old Brazilian. He is the one who reassembled the Brazilian national team and played a vital role in their FIFA World Cup 2002 win. However, it’s extremely complex to figure out what Roman Abramovich exactly had in his mind whilst he decided to sack Scolari.

The other three giants of English Premier League have their managers operating for quite a long time. Sir Alex Ferguson has been managing Manchester United since 1986, Arsene Wenger has been managing Arsenal since 1996 and Rafael Benitez has been managing Liverpool since 2004. Statistics show that time given to all these managers resulted in good results produced by their respective teams. A good example of this even lies within Chelsea FC itself, when Jose Mourinho had been given 3 years to work with the team, Chelsea FC won 2 Premier League titles, 1 FA cup, 1 Community Shield and 2 carling Cups. These 3 years are marked as the best years of Chelsea FC but Russian mentality, corporate thinking and definitely insufficient understanding of football made Roman Abramovich to sack Jose Mourinho.

Scolari’s arrival at Stamford Bridge on 1st July, 2008 has been considered as the revival of Chelsea by football pundits, but only 7 points trail to the league leaders unsettled Abramovich and he again sacked one of the best football managers in the world.

Though, I am not Chelsea fan but I can’t see their down fall at the same time as it will reduce the antagonism in English Premier League. A battle of teams is not just a battle of players in fact it’s a battle of managers as well. Watching the reaction of Jose Mourinho after a defeat by Manchester United was sometimes more fascinating than watching C.Ronaldo and W.Rooney scoring the goals.

Thank God, Manchester United is not owned by Russians, presence of Sir Alex Ferguson for such a long time has a great effect on the team and this is why Manchester United is the most famous and successful football club in the world. Long live Manchester United, long live Sir Alex.
